“Not to turn away from love.”
“Never turn away when someone needs your love.”
(Rule of Benedict 4.26)
There goes my schedule!
In earlier instructions, StBenedict laid claim to my time and money for feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and caring for the sick. We try. Lent reminds us that we could do more. We try harder.
This instruction removes control from our hands. Good works are not to be done according to my schedule and budget. The troubled student who comes after a long day, the last-minute make-up exam, the unexpected request for help: I must find a way to meet them.
The ambiguous Latin tells us, too, to be ready when love turns to us.
