Jesus: Riding on a Donkey

In her reflection on the Gospel reading for Palm/Passion Sunday, Sister Luce Marie focused on the donkey. This was an approach I had never heard before, but she did a skillful job of drawing spiritual nourishment from it. I had never paid much attention to the donkey.

Among the many images and facts that she presented, I was especially taken with what we could call the personality of the donkey.  They are generally calm and peaceful, willing to carry heavy burdens, and to work hard. Donkeys are humble animals in part because of these characteristics: they are not fast and tall like horses.

One of the benefits of lectio divina is the chance to read Scripture slowly and meditatively. I will certainly hear this Gospel text on Sunday from a new perspective!
