Where the Buffalo Roam: US Hwy 87 in South Dakota

Buffalo by the roadside

Buffalo by the roadside

US Highway 87 runs through the western edge of Custer State Park in South Dakota … where the buffalo roam and the drivers are warned to keep their distance.

I probably saw at least 500 buffalo in several big herds as I drove along US 87 and a connecting road. Although the speed limit is much lower – 15mph on some of the hairpin turns in the Black Hills – the visuals sure topped the faster option through the grasslands.
