I was delighted to see the report on Zenit that Professor Teresa Stanton Collett of the University of St. Thomas Law School has been named a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Family (see also here).

Professor Collett was the primary organizer of the University Faculty for Life conference last June, and an earlier Catholic Legal Thought conference hosted at the University of St. Thomas.   Not only has she contributed to the growing legal scholarship on family issues that incorporate the insights of Catholic social teaching – she finds vibrant ways to get students involved in practical legislative and policy making opportunities where they can put their knowledge to work.

The Council has published the quarterly Review Familia et Vita since 1994. It organizes the World Meetings of Families, convened in Rome in 1994, in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, Rome again in 2000, Manila in 2003, Valencia, Spain, in 2006, and  Mexico City in 2009.

On June 6, 2006, the Council published a document entitled “Family and Human Procreation”[12] noting that “Never before has the natural institution of marriage and the family been the victim of such violent attacks.”

I am sure that Professor Collett will be a great asset to the Council – and I suspect that the contacts and activities of that group will also enhance her own work.
